Hey everyone... just got the family a used Super Chexx for Christmas. I've gone through and cleaned up the machine and replaced a few minor parts. Here's the problem... I've got static in the sound if it's turned up AT ALL (I mean anything above a whisper). I used a can of air and sprayed the board and the speakers but that's about it. Could the speakers be bad?

hi guys HERE IS JP ANSWER TO THIS STATIC NOISE ISSUE, we hear in the background:
AS OF TODAY (APRIL 18-2013)
The static is normal and a common inquiry with users. It was originally intended to simulate the “hush” of the crowd, giving the game some background noise in between the play-by-play.
This concept works better in a louder environment such as a bar or arcade. In homes and offices not as much, as you know it sounds just like… static.
Thank you,
Jon Pierpoint | ICE Service Tech
(hope this will prevent all of you to try and clean some connections with contact cleaner and all, and wasting time or risking blowing something else up, by trying to clean and disconnecting a bunch of wires.)
thanks BLAAZE3

That is an interesting answer. I contacted them back in 2003 or so when I bought my game factory direct. They said the static was bad speaker connections. I think it is a made up answer to explain a manufacturing glitch so they don't have to warranty it. It has always bothered me. If that answer is the truth, however, then I recommend to ICE to either make the crowd noise more realistic, or drop it all together.

Blaaze, have you tried temporarily connecting a different speaker, like ANY speaker? Sounds like to me this is a bad speaker. Those little speakers are easy to replace and you can get those things at any best buy or walmart. Might be worth a shot.
My brother has the same table you do (same sound board) and his table does NOT have any crackling that you mention. I have a 2nd gen table (No Rick Jennerette) and I do not have any static either.
Sounds like you have a bad speaker or connection, which could be some pretty easy testing and R&R.

Keep us posted. I don't think we should have to turn the sound way down to avoid the crackling noise during organ music and vocals. I had an older super chexx version with canada vs USA and it never sounded than way. It was beautiful to play on! The new version just sounds bad in a home man cave.

Has anyone bought a brand new unit, and does the ones being produced now have same issue? If not, maybe ICE can swap out our motherboards/sound boards, or provide a free repair if we pay for the shipping?

Blaaze, have you tried calling ICE and speaking with Tech Support? They always answer the phones and are pretty helpful. Unless that is the guy you already spoke with? I imagine there is more then one person though?

I too just bought and brought home my first SuperChexx game last week - for our basement. I live in the Buffalo, NY area near ICE. My wife is not happy that I paid that much money for something that sounds like the speakers are blown. I called and spoke to Francois at ICE cust svc and he did not let on that he was aware of any such problem. Having read this I don't appreciate that. He told me to call some other time from home so he could hear it over the phone. He advised that cust svc is open wkds until 6:00 (I work during the day - or I couldn't afford one of these, I get home at 5:30). I have called 3 times now only to hear that their offices are clsoed.

I had the same issue with my brand new game...didn't think much of it...well after a few weeks, I ended up causing my board to short (long story, very scary experience, but 100% my fault I believe) well I contacted JP, who sent me a new board under warranty (great service!!)...well after i installed the new board, no more static...so I believe the main board itself is what causes static in the speakers..not the speakers themselves...

I didn't read all the posts here so i apologize if you have already fixed this, but it sounds like you don't have a good ground on the logic board.

Yes i spoke to JP directly...very helpful, but my unit was under warranty...i only had the game for 4 weeks or so...but as I said, once the board was replaced, i never had any static ever again...new board was perfect!

I bought a brand new NHL unit with Rick Jenneret commentary, and had the same poor-quality sound issue. I thought the speakers were blown. Here is the e-mail response I received from one representative:
"Super Chexx is an arcade game designed and built in the 1980’s and still utilizes that same sound technology, so this is normal. That sound is typical of the PA system in a hockey arena’s and stadiums back in the 80’s. These games were designed to be used in loud bars and arcades so the sound clarity was never a big issue in that environment."
I called another representative who did not mention it as a common issue and instead said I may need a new mother board. It is on the way. I hope it works! For what these things cost, it should have superior sound!

The sound on mine is lousy. Mine was bought brand new in the box and has VERY minimal use on it. I've never been happy with the sound for something that cost around $3k.
I'm sure they won't be sending me and replacement boards since I've had it so long even though it's been stored for most of it's life. Are there are other fixes?
