Just a general observation on painting these, I've found hand painting these things is impossible! I've settled into stripping them with a light sand blaster, priming them with auto Primer, painting the base coat with auto spray paint and then hand painting as little as possible. The acrylics I'm using (Testor's Model Master) don't do well unless there is lots of paint on the brush. It dries so quickly that I'm getting terrible results. I've been testing different methods of masking and have found that electrical tape is by far the best masking tape as it is very pliable and bends around curves and keeps paint from going under the line. I've got a cheap airbrush and have done much much better with masking and air brushing than with hand painting. Example, the leg stripes, for the love of God I want to destroy something when I've been hand painting the Russians (white on red). For the Americans I masked and airbrushed but made the mistake of using acrylic (water based) paint (but the color matched and it was the only one I could find). When I pulled the masking tape (electrical tape) off the paint peeled up. Here are some examples of decent work...and crap work. The one on the left was hand painting, painful. The one on the right was air brushed. I still have the detail work to do to straighten out the lines and hit the corners with a smaller brush but you can see there is a lot less work to do on the right guy. Attachments:

Here's the sand blasting, easiest part of the whole deal! If anybody needs sand blasting, send me your players, I'll be happy to do them, no charge. My brother owns a shop with the machine in it. It took about 15 minutes to do 10 players. (I did 2 the hard way, by hand...) www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdLszbZ9EDg

You are MASKING the lines? Haha you have way more patience then I do man, I just hand painted all of my players, no masking except the stick.

Nice work on the painting. Going to be an awesome system once you are done. Looks like you have alot of patience when painting those players. I have a large number of players I am going to start painting soon, I hope I can maintain the same amount of patience. I think I will paint directly over the existing 'cheap' paint, just with some light sanding to get the rough spots off.
I am surprised you painted the sticks, are you not worrried about the paint rubbing off on the ice surface?

I had to mask the lines, my hand painting was awful. After all the time I've spent, I was pretty disappointed and how terrible they looked. I've gotten better at the masking, electrical tape works really well. I've got to try some different paints, I know that Testors is not the best, I'm using Model Masters but it's still Testors. The base coats looked fantastic, I've had to simplify the team jerseys quite a bit, there is no way I can do all the striping from the original US Jerseys, let alone the 3 white stripes on the Russian pants. I painted the stick but left the bottom clean. I've also tried tape on one of them, I'll see how it holds after a few coats of clear coat and some heavy play.

Here's the taped version of the stick. I'm not sure how well it will hold up. Attachments:

Here's Jim Craig with the decals on. Just a little touch up left to straighten out the lines and his hair. I'm pretty happy with the decals, they're very thin, the lines are hardly noticeable. I'm going to have to put on several layers of clear coat. Attachments:

Looking good, I have one quick tip for you. On that player posted just above, I see the factory overspray on his neck, my players had that too. Just take a Q-tip and dip it in lacquer thinner and rub the neck area with the q tip. Takes the old paint right off.

Thanks for the tip. I'm happy with some of the results (the decals and the base coat) but frustrated with the painted details, ie lines and stripes. The mistake I made was trying to do them all at once, it's too much work and my machine is down while I'm farting around finishing this. I'm going to start over and do one player at a time from start to finish, I'm going to try some different paints, I can't lay a straight line down without it being too thin, then when I go back over it it gets all gloppy.

Here's most of the USA team. Bonus points to whoever can tell me which two I screwed the names up on, you gotta know your Super Chexx hockey to deduce this epic screwup... Attachments:

I've got the Raspberry Pi computer working now, there's a small reed switch attached the bottom of the goal which senses the puck entering the goal. A script running in the Pi plays a horn (St Louis Blues) when a goal is scored. youtu.be/joiATnO4j2A

Looks great! Just wondering what kind of decal paper/printer you are using...

That is awesome! asevie, I am very interested in modifying my system to use a raspberry pi also. I have seen that you have posted a few video's to youtube which I will try to follow along for my conversion. I am still working on a net conversion first.
Great Job!

Looks great! Just wondering what kind of decal paper/printer you are using... Testors Decal Paper, you can find it at Michaels, Hobby Lobby or Amazon. You need the clear coat spray as well. Print them on a color ink jet, give 3-4 solid coats of the spray and then cut them out, soak in water for 10 seconds, wait another 15 seconds or so and slide them on. The paper comes in clear and white. The white backed paper isn't thick enough to show up without being darkened by the color underneath. You need to match the background color as well (in my case the Russian red) and basically do a cut out of the white on that color. Better to do white jerseys if you have a choice and then use the clear.
