Hey RK - do you currently have a one-piece base? I just received my split base directly from Chexx. They just saw in half and added a long hinge at the bottom so you can open it. You may be able to do this yourself. Go Hawks.

I just did this myself. Bought a house with a 34" wide basement staircase so I had to saw the base in half and put it back together. First thing I did was order a 3" open width hinge here: bit.ly/Td867a They give you one free cut (mine I had them do 32" which worked well). I'm not handy at all, and it really wasn't too bad. Just get a quality tool to saw the base in half and you'll be ok. I used a dremel, but I probably would have been better off using a skilsaw. Good news for me is that it works. I do have a bit of a gap now where the saw was on one side if you look at the base, but it doesn't hurt the functionality in any way. About $45 for the hinge and 1 x 4, so beats $500. Also, check around the 2:30 mark of this video. You can see how they do it. Mine is probably ass-backwards. I have the hinge on the bottom(outside of base against the floor). www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvgNz0U0liI
