It takes a lot of pressure to get them through the lock washer that sits above the slot, but below the ice surface. Make sure that the slot lines up perfectly with the player post when you put it in. I had a similar problem with the odd players not spinning freely once I put everything back together after a first cleaning of small paint chips and plastic after the game was broken-in a little. I just took the player back out and tried again and then tested how well it moved. If you are using new washers then it will be particularly stubborn to get the players into their slot, but it can be done.

Try taking them out and make sure they are lined up well and put them back in again. I had to do this a couple of times for my players where there felt like there was a bit of resistance to them spinning freely. I think this is due to the lock washer not sitting flush beneath the ice surface, or the players not going in perfectly square.

I'm alittle confused by the description here. Should the lock washers be between the ice and the metal chanels? Mine are inside those chanels sitting directly on the gear boxes. Maybe it makes no difference.
Should the goalie have one?

That is correct, sorry for the poor description. Nevertheless, when you place a player into the slot, the lock washer my rub a little on the channel. Make sure the lock washer is flat on the surface of the gear box. Sometimes this just means taking the player out and putting him back in. Those lock washer have a tight fit around the player post. Over time, removing the players often will require new lock washers I would imagine, because you will eventually stretch the opening of the washer and the hold will not be as tight. The goalie should not have one. Either there is a cotter-pin or screw attaching the goalie to the post on which the goalie rests.
