Here is a breakdown, of how it all went down, in Burlington town:
First of all, I'm greatly disappointed because we only had 8 players in the tournament. We would have had 12, but 2 got car trouble (the Davis boys) and 2 others called out sick the day before the tournament (the Jabs). Either way, 12 isn't so great either. I had hoped that after all the KONE's, the NJBHC, the Del Val Classic, and the IBHF National championships, that interest in bubble hockey had been rekindled among a fairly large group of guys. It would appear I was mistaken. Aside from 6 players from my league (SJ Bubble Hockey), there were only 2 others - Mike Iacono and Brian Bragg, 2 very good players from North Jersey who both played in the Bud Light Bubble Boys National Championships in 2001 (or 2002?) playing out of St. Louis, so some of you guys probably know them and know that they are good guys and real good players.
I never expect people to travel to Burlington to play, so my disappointment is more directed at the local NJ, DE, PA, and NY folks who seem to have dropped off the planet in the last few months. You all said you wanted more tournaments, yet none of you showed?!? However, excuse my digression - on to the results:
I had 3 Chexx tables for use (and a 4th on stand-by). We played from a little after 1:30pm until a little after 6:30pm. Everyone played 14 bracket games (playing every other player 2x) to determine tournament seedings. The standings:
1) Bill Brooks - 11 and 3
2) John Gaffney (me!!!) - 10 and 4
3) Brian Bragg - 9 and 5
4) Mike Iacono - 7 and 7
5) Chris (Monkey) Bleistine - 5 and 9
6) Jim Bernard - 5 and 9
7) Len Mecca - 5 and 9
8) Brian Nelson - 4 and 10
Following Bracket play there was a Double Elimination tournament, with each series a best of 3 in both the Winners and Losers Brackets:
In the Winner's Bracket:
#1 seed Bill Brooks beat Brian Nelson 2 games to 0
#2 seed John Gaffney beat #7 Len Mecca 2 games to 0
#3 seed Brian Bragg beat #6 seed Jim Bernard 2 games to 1
#4 seed Mike Iacono beat #5 "Monkey" 2 games to 0 (in 2 overtime games - but "Monkey" would get his revenge...)
#1 seed Bill Brooks beat #4 Mike Iacono 2 games to 0
#2 seed John Gaffney beat #3 seed Brian Bragg 2 games to 0
#1 seed Bill Brooks beat #2 seed John Gaffney 2 games to 1 to advance to the finals...
In the Loser's Bracket:
"Monkey" beat Brian Nelson 2 games to 1
Len Mecca beat Jim Bernard 2 games to 1
"Monkey" then dispatched Brian Bragg 2 games to 1
Mike Iacono beat Len Mecca 2 games to 1, setting up:
"Monkey" vs Mike II, and a victorious "Monkey" 2 games to 1
John Gaffney then beat "Monkey" 2 games to 0 to reach the Finals
John Gaffney beat Bill Brooks 2 games to 1 to set up a final 3 game series for the Championship:
Bill Brooks beat John Gaffney (d**n that Bill Brooks!) 2 games to 0 in the Finals.
Top 5 finishers:
1) Bill Brooks
2) John Gaffney
3) Chris "Monkey" Bleistine
4) Mike Iacono
5) Brian Bragg
Congratulations to Bill, and thanks to everyone who came out and bubbled. No one played fewer than 19 games on the day, and many beers were consumed. Pictures of the 5 trophy winners (none of which are Sully!) and some game action shots will follow. CHEERS!!!
