Week #1 saw only 7 of a possible 14 players make it out for league night - we had a few last minute cancellations and some illnesses, too. However, good bubblin' was had by all. Everyone played either 11 or 12 games. The results:
John Gaffney - 11 and 1, 70 goals scored, 31 allowed Bill Brooks - 10-2, 68 and 36 Brian Nelson - 7-4, 44 and 41 Jim Bernard - 6-5, 42 and 36 Dan Pettit - 4-8, 29 and 49 Len Mecca - 2-10, 37 and 60 Josh Ginter - 1-11, 31 and 69
Individual game results and league standings are listed on the NABHA website (PLAYBUBBLE.ORG). Hopefully, some pictures will be posted soon as well. Additionally, we in the S.J.B.H.L. hope to have our own website up and running in the very near future. Details to follow. Next League Night: MONDAY, JANUARY 29TH. CHEERS!!

Week # 2 is in the books: The 2007 winter edition of the South Jersey Bubble Hockey League rolls on with week #2 action. Bill Brooks has his usual stellar night, going 15-1 on the evening. Everyone else sputters to different degrees along the way – no one else has fewer than 4 losses on the night! The results: Bill Brooks – 15-1 John Gaffney - 12-4 Jim Bernard– 11-5 Brian Nelson – 10-6 Chris “Monkey” Bleistine 9-7 Dan Pettit 6-10 Jason James – 5-11 Jake Plaskey – 4-12 Glenn Curtis – 0-16 (but he created a heck of a website – www.njbubblehockey.org - check it out!) Overall standings will be posted soon. The next league night is Thursday Feb. 8th, 2007. If anyone out there is interested, send an email to: njbubblehockey@verizon.net Bubble On!

A little late is better than never, I guess - sorry, I was vacationing in Florida with the "Bubble Biznotch" the past week (also known as Lisa). Week #3 results: Bill Brooks - 9 and 1 John Gaffney - 8 and 2 (though at least I was 1-0 against Bill - d**n that guy is good, and getting better!) Jason James - 6 and 4, in a good night for the newbie! Brian Nelson - 6 and 5 (he had a makeup game against Jimmy) Dan Pettit - 5 and 5, another newbie with impressive numbers... Len Mecca - 5 and 5, showing he knows much more than just Stiga and other tabletop games Chris "Monkey" Bleistine - 4 and 6 (Oh, Monkey!!) Jim Bernard - 4 and 7, in an off night for Jimmy B Mike Wellens - 3 and 7, in his SJBHL debut - not bad at all! Glenn Curtis - 1 and 9, posting his first win of the year (along with several 1 and 2 goal losses - a good night for Glenn!) Overall standings show Bill in 1st place by 3 games over John (me), with Brian and Jimmy in a battle for 3rd and 4th place. Week #4 is this coming Thursday (02/22/07) - more results to follow, or check out the following websites for more info: www.playbubblehockey.com (see the League link) www.njbubblehockey.org, the official website of the SJBHL. This past Thursday we had 10 guys yet again for bubble night at JG's, week # 4 of the Winter 2007 South Jersey Bubble Hockey League (SJBHL) Season. Double digit players two (2) weeks in a row! Two (2) more newcomers, Tom Myers and Dave Hartnett, came out for league night. Everyone played 10 games of singles, and all but Monkey and Len were able to stay a little later and get in 3 games of doubles later in the night. In summary: - JG (me) went undefeated on the night, 10-0, with a plus 33 goal differential, by far my best night of the season. However, there was no Bill Brooks (we suspect Monkey disposed of him most heinously earlier in the week), and I had 2 more than lucky O/T wins in games I clearly should have lost to Jake and Len. The bubble was kind to me, but I'll take it! - Brian was a quiet but efficient 7-3 on the night and is solidly in 3rd place in the league overall. - Jason was 6-4 for the evening, but outscored his opponents almost 2-1 (42-23). He put up double digit goals twice on the night. - Len, too, was an impressive 6-4 and scored the 3rd most goals on the night (44)! - Monkey, Dan, Jake, and Jimmy all finished with 5-5 records, showing the depth and parity in the league - anyone can beat anyone on any night! - Tom Myers finished 1-9 but only lost to me 7-5 in a game that was 6-5 and in doubt at the end of regulation, so he can play and should get better in the coming weeks. - Dave Hartnett went 0-10, but he had 3 O/T losses and several other close games, so his record could have been much better with a couple of right bounces here or there. In doubles: John/Dan went 2-1, Jason/Dave went 2-1, Brian/Tom were 1-2, and Jimmy/Jake were 2-1 The next bubble night is in a week and a half, Tuesday night March 6th, starting around 7:30pm. If the 10 guys who were here this past Thursday make it, and the other league guys who couldn't make this past Thursday can make it (Bill, Glenn, Josh, and Mike), that would be 14 guys!!! Hopefully we can pull it off. See you all March 6th. As always, if anyone else wants in, send me an email before March 6th. Thanks, and CHEERS.

We only had 7 guys last night, but once again there was some seriously competitive action under the dome! Out of 42 games played in singles, 13 were games decided by 1 goal, and another 12 were 2 goal games - that's 25 out of 42 decided by 2 goals of less! Amazing. But clearly the game of the night was Jake v Monkey - 11 to 10, Jake!!! I said it last night - I've played a lot of bubble hockey, and I've never seen both guys score double digits goals, and I don't think I've ever seen 21 total goals scored period! A brief synopsis: John (me) - 11 - 1 on the night, losing my last game of the night to everyone's nemesis Brian Nelson (blast you Brian Nelson!!!). Brian - another sneaky good 8 - 4, 2nd best record on the night, and when combined with Monkey the best trash talkin' doubles due ever (too bad 80% of it was directed against other!). Dan and Jason - both 6 - 6 for the evening and of course split their games with each other. Jimmy and "Monkey" - each 4 - 8 on the night, sub-par for them, and of course they split with each other too. Perhaps most surprising is that they gave up the most total goals on the night (57 for Monkey and 50 for Jimmy), and both are usually very good defensive players (of course Monkey's # was inflated by Jake's 11-spot - Oh, Monkey!) Jake - 3 - 9, but 6 of his losses were by 1 or 2 goals, so he was a victim of some bad "perils of the bubble" karma more than anything else. The next 2 nights are Thursdays - March 15 (not this Thursday but next) and March 29. There may be one more league night after that, then we'll likely decide when to hold our playoff tournament. If anyone still wants to come out, it isn't too late - just send me an email and let me know you are interested. See you all next Thursday. Wish me luck in St. Louis - I'll need it (or a whole lot of thingytails!!!). CHEERS! PS - the "pick-up" doubles records for the night: John/Jake - 3-1 Jason/Monkey - 1-2 Dan/Jimmy - 2-1 Brian/Monkey - 0-2 Brian/Dan - 1-1

Here's the scoop on week #6: JG - 14-0 on the night (Well, clearly 2 kinds of cold medication and 5 kinds of beer do wonders for my bubble game! However, I've been sick ever since and now have pink eye and am home sick from work today and look like all hell. Was it worth it? No, but 14-0 is sweet...) Jason - 9-5 (He continues to march up the standings. He gave up the fewest goals on the night (38, even less than me) and registered 3 shutouts. However, he has lost his integrity in his quest for victories, as the p*ssy pass, p*ssy shot, and the "Monkey" were all witnessed on multiple occasions. How do you feel about those shots now, Mr. James?) "Monkey" - 8-6 (Sweet, sweet Monkey got back to his winning ways, scoring the 2nd most goals on the night (57) and firing at will with his "Monkey shot." He also got the defense rolling, registering 4 1-goal games. Though, rumor has it that Monkey's pooh-flinging and other unsanitary ways contributed to my pink eye - Oh, Monkey!) Brian - 7-7 ("Wheels's" wheels came off a bit Thursday night. His defense was uncharacteristically porous, as he surrendered the 2nd most goals on the night (60), but made up for it with a strong offense. Despite this average effort from him, he moved into 2nd place in the league standings - see below) Dan and Len - 5-9 (They had almost identical overall stats, and split 2 overtime games with each other - it doesn't get much more even than that) Jimmy and John Power - 4-10 (That's right, John Power made it down from NY for the evening. He brought his Benej (rhymes with "okay" for those who can't pronounce it) table hockey game, which we fiddled with between games. His record doesn't tell how strong he played - he had 3 O/T losses and only had a -11 points differential in 14 games, so all his games were close. As for Jimmy - yikes, guy! His usually solid defense betrayed him, getting outscored 49-66. However, he is still holding on to 5th place in the overall standings. As for the standings, I've factored in 6 variables - total wins, winning %, NABHA points, NABHA rankings, league appearances, and head-to-head matchups (to break ties or close calls). I ranked everyone 1-15 (with 1 being the best) in each category, then totaled up the points at the end. I tried to do this so that I don't necessarily get an unfair advantage (I'm there every league night), but also so that guys who show up all the time do get "extra credit" so to speak. So, without boring everyone further with the details, here is how we stand with 1 week left to go: John - 1st place (6 points overall) Brian - 2nd place (12 points) Bill - 3rd (17 points - has the head-to-head tiebreaker over Jason) Jason - 4th (18 points) Jimmy 5th (21 points) Chris - 6th (26 points - has the head-to-head tiebreaker over Dan, 6 games to 3) Dan - 7th (26 points) Len - 8th (35 points) Jake - 9th (41 points) John Power -10th (46 points) 11-15 = Mike, Josh, Tom, Glenn, Dave These standings could all change after our next league night (Thursday March 29th). That is also the last night to qualify for the season-ending tournament the following week (April 2,3, or 4 - t.b.a.). Hope to see everyone Thursday March 29th. Anyone else who still wants to come out let me know ASAP. Thanks. PS - if any of the full time league guys has an issue with either Monday April 2, Tuesday April 3, or Wednesday April 4 for our season ending Tournament, let me know ASAP! Thanks.

First of all, thanks to all the guys from last night for donating $10 toward the trophies. That was most unexpected (sneaky Jimmy!) and a very gracious offering, and not necessary at all, but thank you very much. I decided a while back not to charge anything for the league this year - you guys are always great company, everyone is on their best behavior at all times, you all respect my tables, my beer fridge, and Lisa's and my home - it is my pleasure to host the league and share my "bubble wealth" (or serious disorder, depending on how you see it). But I thought it worth noting that there has never been a single problem in the 3 years I've been doing this, and that is a testament to you guys more than anything. I'm there no matter what - it is you guys who make the evenings so much fun for me and hopefully for each other. Having said that, enough of the @ss kissing and smoke blowin' - here's the skinny: Last night (the last regular season league night): JG - 16-1. I don't usually toot my own horn (insert snide comment here), but last night I played at the top of my game most games, and did just enough to win on my off games. 16-1 against the level of talent we had there last night might have been my best evening of the year I (or any year). Of course, it was mostly due to the homebrew! Having said all that, I'll probably flame out in the first round of the playoffs...do'h, I just jinxed myself!!! Bill - 15-2 He takes a month and a half off, shows up, and mops up everyone almost all night long. How can such a nice guy be so hated by so many??? John Power - 11-6 That's right, John Power, in his 2nd league night of the year, followed up last week's 4-10 record with a very impressive 11-6, including a win over Bill. He literally pushed aside the competition (and Dan into the backyard, along with the Flyers table!), then declared he was not satisfied with his performance!?! Look out for JP come playoff time - he is in it to win it... Brian - 9-8 Very strange night for Brian - scored 9 goals on Jason (a good defender) early on and reached 6 goals two 2 other times, but got shutout by Len 7-0, lost to Glenn 3-1, and scored fewer goals on the night than he gave up. However, he did enough to hold onto 2nd place overall (see *Playoffs* below). Jason - 8-9 4 one (1) goal O/T losses on the night significantly impacted his record, but he finished a solid 4th overall in his first year playing in the league, and he too will be tough to deal with come playoff time. Dan and Len - 7-10 3 out of 5 weeks these guys have had the same record, and another week there was only 1 game difference. Somehow they've got to match up in the playoffs! Jimmy - 3-6 Jimmy couldn't stay all night and only got in 9 games (1 against everyone). 4 of his 6 losses were by 1 goal in O/T, so he too could have had a much better night. Maybe a little less time sneaking around collecting money for trophies and a little more time working on his game...Thanks again, guy. Nick Tripolits - 4-13 in his debut Nick is no stranger to table hockey - he knows what he is doing and has tremendous ice coverage and overall quickness, but is still new to the nuances and quirks of "the bubble." Another guy done in by 4 one (1) goal O/T losses... Glenn - 1-16 Maybe only 1 win on the night, but he manhandled Brian in a game not nearly as close as the 3-1 score might indicate! Glenn also had a couple of gut-wrenching O/T losses. For all the final regular season stats, go to www.playbubblehockey.org and follow the link for the South Jersey League, or go to our website [glow=red,2,300]www.njbubblehockey.org [/glow]and go to the link on the side for NABHA/NJ Player info, then click on "Standings." [glow=red,2,300] *PLAYOFFS*[/glow] The season-ending playoff tournament will be this coming Tuesday April 3rd, 7:00pm start time. We'll open up with a single elimination doubles event to get loose (teams will be decided April 3, depending who shows), then go right into the tournament. It will be double elimination, best of 3 series in both the Winner's and Loser's brackets. In a twist, I've decided to schedule series to be played on specific tables, so the higher seed WON'T pick his table to play on! However, the higher seed can pick his side of the table and stay there for the whole series, or switch sides if he chooses between series games. I've got trophies for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Seeding won't be determined until I know who is coming. My convoluted 6-part formula to determine the final league standings is complete, and eligible players for the tournament are listed in final order of finish (if you showed up for 1 week you can play April 3rd): John G (1), Brian (2), Bill (3), Jason (4), "Monkey" (5), Jimmy (6), Dan (7), John P (8), Len (9), Jake (10), Nick (11), Mike (12), Glenn (13), Josh (14), Tom (15), and Dave (Hartnett) (16). I doubt all 16 of you will come out April 3, but you are all welcome and I'd love to have you. If that were to happen, Loser's Bracket series might be single elimination. Please let me know who can make it - should be a blast! CHEERS, and see you all next week!

Thanks Bill. Sorry I'm so late with the update - my liver hasn't spoken to me in 3 days after all the alcohol I pumped into it 04/03/07 (those who know my bubble hockey game know I have no game without beer, and to win the season-ending tournament against the group of players who were there 04/03/07 I consumed even more than I usually do!). We did a double elimination tournament 4/03/07, with seedings based on overall league standings at season's end. Players played a 3 game series in both the Winner's and Loser's brackets. I ended up drinking a small liquor store and winning the whole thing, beating Bill Brooks in the finals, for my first league title in 3 seasons. Bill took 2nd place, but not before forcing the "if" series by beating me out of the Loser's bracket. League newbie Dan Pettit had a great tournament and finished 3rd - he lost his opening round series to Bill, then stormed through the Loser's bracket knocking out Glenn Curtis, Nick Tripolits, Brian Nelson, and Jason James before encountering Mr. Brooks again. First year league player Jason also had an impressive run, losing his first series to Jim Bernard but then blitzing through the Loser's bracket and eliminating Jake Plasky, Len Mecca, and getting revenge on Jimmy before bowing to Dan. All in all the game play was fierce all night - out of 19 series played, 11 went the full 3 games!!! A bunch of the games went into O/T as well. Thanks to everyone for coming out and making another great league season, and for being the great guests you guys always are when you're at my place. The next league will start up toward the end of the summer '07 (around the end of August or September), and I'll let all of you know the details asap. Hopefully, we'll even get a few more of you to come out and "bubble." Also, don't forget the tournament at my place Saturday June 2 - over 10 guys have said they'd be there already, so it is shaping up to be a full 20 player event. More info will follow shortly, but anyone who is interested should let me know asap before the player list fills up. Thanks again. CHEERS! PS - check out [glow=red,2,300] www.playbubblehockey.org [/glow]for all the game results from the league and the season-ending tournament 04/03/07. PSPS - check out my website (www.njbubblehockey.org) in a few days for pictures and a write-up about the league season.

I forgot - we also did a Doubles single elimination tournament at the SJBHL to get "warmed-up" for the singles tournament. The teams were drawn according to the best records in our "pick-up" doubles series:
#1 seed - Jim Bernard (8-4 record on the year) and Dan Pettit (7-4 on the year); #2 - John Gaffney (7-6) and Jake Plaskey (4-3); #3 - Bill Brooks (2-1) and Glenn Curtis (2-1) #4 - Brian Nelson (6-7) and Len Mecca (3-3) #5 - Jason James (5-7) and Nick Tripolitis (0-0)
#1 Dan and Jimmy had a bye. #4 and #5 played for the right to face the #1 team. #5 Jason/Nick prevailed in a 3 games series with #4 Brian/Len. #5 Jason/Nick then upset #1 Dan/Jimmy in a best of 3 to reach the Finals. #2 John/Jake disposed of #3 Bill/Glenn in a tense 3-games to reach the Finals. There, #2 John/Jake beat #5 Jason/Nick in a 3 game series to win the innagural SJBHL Doubles Championship.
