Hi everyone:
The results are in from the June 2, 2007, Chexx bubble hockey tournament in Burlington, NJ. $25 entry fee got you bubblin', a t-shirt, unlimited beer, snacks, and pizza, and prize monies for the winners. Each player played 10 games in pool play, followed by a seeded and flighted double elimination tournament. Here's how each pool broke down, with the top 4 on each side going "A" flight and the bottom 3 going "B" flight:
East Pool:
1) Doug Davis (AKA Monkey Jr. or D-squared ("the Deranged Dolphin") - 10-0
2) John Gaffney (me) - 9-1, with a loss to "Jr"
3) Jim Bernard - 7-3
4) Jason James - 5-5
5) Dan Pettit - 5-5
6) Glenn Curtis - 1-9
7) Nick Ribis - 1-9
West Pool:
1) Jeremy Davis (d**n those Davis boys!) - 10-0
2) Mike Nathale - 6-4
3) Brian Nelson - 6-4
4) Marc Krasner - 5-5
5) Mike Kemp - 5-5
6) Jeff Nathale - 1-9
7) Les Reppert - 0-10
In the "A" Flight double elim event, Winner's Bracket, Doug beat Marc 2 games to 0 (11-1, 3-1). Mike Nathale beat Jimmy 2-1 (7-4, 1-8, and 5-1). Jeremy ousted Jason 2-0 (10-1, 7-4), and I bested Brian in a tight 3 game series (6-7, 6-5, and 7-3). Doug then dispatched Mike in 2 games (7-2 and 7-4), and Jeremy ousted me in 2 high scoring affairs (9-7 and 7-6). In the "A" winner's final, Jeremy won in a 2-gamer (5-3 and 7-6).
In the "A" Loser's Bracket, Jimmy eliminated Marc in a fierce defensive war (2-1) and Brian took out Jason (4-2). Brian then beat Mike N. (6-2), while Jimmy surprised me with "not as close as the score indicated" win (5-4). Brian snuck past Jimmy (3-2) to face Doug in the Loser's finals, with Doug winning (6-4). Younger bro Doug made Jeremy sweat but couldn't pull off the upset, losing in a 3 game series (2-4, 8-4, and 9-4). So, Jeremy Davis won the Burlington IceHouse Invitational and the $100 first place prize, Doug Davis took 2nd and $75, and the SJBHL's own Brian "Wheels" Nelson finished 3rd and claimed $50.
In the very competitive "B" flight, Winner's Bracket scores were as follows:
Jeff over Nick (9-5 and 7-5); Les over Glenn in a great 3 game series (2-3, 4-2, 7-3)
Jeff over #1 seeded B flight player Dan in 3 tight games (2-3, 4-3, and 4-1); Mike K over Les (4-2, 2-0)
Jeff beat Mike K in the "B" winner's finals in 2 games - 11-4 and 5-3.
In the "B" Loser's Bracket, Nick upended Les (score ) and Dan got a bye when Glenn had to withdraw (make sure his check doesn't bounce Glenn!!!).
Nick then took out Dan (5-2) and Mike (4-3) to set up a revenge match against Jeff in the "B" finals. However, Jeff Nathale was too much, winning in 2 games (5-1 and 5-4) to win the $25 prize as B Flight Champion.
Thanks to everyone who came out for the tournament. We had good brews, good pizza, great bubblin'. Congrats to all the winners - Jeremy, Doug, Brian, and Jeff. Hopefully I'll get another tournament together this fall, but for now next on the horizon will be the Fall '07 South Jersey Bubble Hockey League, starting up about August '07. I know we've got a few new members already after this event.
Thanks again - this write-up will go on my website (njbubblehockey.org) and chexxfan.com, and some pictures too in the future. CHEERS!
