Jeremy Davis wins 04/18/09 IceHouse Invitational in Burlington NJ!!! Jeremy Davis (CT) captured yet another Chexx bubble hockey tournament title to cement his hold on the #1 ranking in bubble hockey with an impressive win in Burlington, NJ, Saturday April 18th, 2009. Read on for a detailed write-up of this tournament!!! And look for the "Burlington Bubble Classic 2009" coming in October '09!!! The event was held at JG’s “IceHouse” (yes, basement) and featured 14 players from 4 states and 2 countries battling for 5 trophies – 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place in the “A” Flight, 1st Place in the “B” Flight, and 1st Place in the “C” Flight. Prior to game play, the 14 players were broken into 2 pool groups – the South Jersey Bubble Hockey League (S.J.B.H.L.) “regulars” vs the “out-of-towners.” Each grouping had 7 players, with each player playing single games against the players in the other group for a total of 49 games in pool play (each player played 7 individual games). Before I list the individual results, props go out to the S.J.B.H.L. – we went 29-22 overall against the invaders!!! Good job S.J.B.H.L.!!!
The pool play had some interesting surprises. First of all was young Jimmy Schwartz (NJ) of the S.J.B.H.L. going an impressive 7-0 in pool play, including a 4-2 win over Jeremy to claim the #1 seed for the tournament to follow. The kid threw down the gauntlet to the world’s #1 prior to the tournament and made it stick! Kudos Jimmy. Jeremy’s only loss was to Jimmy, and his 6-1 record was good for the #2 seed. Here are the complete games scores from pool play:
After pool play was completed, players were seeded #1-#14 for a modified “Knock-Down” double elimination tournament. Players played a 3 game series against each other, with the series Winner advancing in the “A” bracket and the loser “Knocking-Down” to “B.” The final 4 left standing in the “A” bracket played their own tournament for the 3 “A” trophies. The first 4 players to lose in “B” flight “knocked-down” to “C” flight for a single game, single elimination tourney of their own for the “C” trophy. The remaining players stayed and fought it out in “B” flight. Here’s how it all shook out:
#1 Jimmy and # Jeremy had byes into the round of 8.
#3 Bill Brooks (NJ) had little difficulty with #14 newcomer Anthony Hall from Niagara (NY), sweeping him 2 games to 0 (6-2, 9-0).
#6 Brian Nelson (PA) had 2 tough games with newcomer Michael Hall (NY) but managed to advance to the “A” flight round of 8.
#7 Kieran Valla (CT) was upset by Jordan Beattie (Canada) in a tense 3 gamer for the 1st upset of the night (more would follow). Jordan moved on in “A,” Kieran went down to “B.”
#4 seed JG (NJ) took 2 games from #13 Larry Jefford (NJ), the last one a tough 7-5 throwdown.
#5 Jason Avery (Canada) had little trouble handling Chris “Monkey” Bleistine (NJ) in 2 straight (6-3, 6-0).
#8 Dan Pettit (PA) see-sawed with # 9 Marc Krasner (NJ) but prevailed 2 games to 1 (8-1, 2-5, 3-0).
That set up the final 8 in “A” flight, and maybe the biggest story:
***#1 Jimmy goes down!!!!***
#8 Dan took the #1 seeded youngster to the woodshed for a beatdown, albeit in 3 hard fought games. But that is the 1st time the #1 seed hasn’t made it to the final 4 in any tournament I’ve ever ran, and I’ve run a bunch – big, big upset for the kid. And just the beginning of Dan’s solid play all day…
#4 JG sent #5 Jason to the “B” flight, 2 games to 0. JG had the Old Chub flowing and Jason had some bad luck in both games.
#2 Jeremy over #10 Jordan in 2 games, with Jeremy flexing some offensive and defensive muscle in both.
#6 Brian in a big upset over #3 Bill, 2 games to 0. Brian has been looking for a breakout win in tournament play and this may have been it. Bill going to B flight was a shocker! Good job Brian!
With everyone else now down in “B” flight…
That made the final 4 “A” flight as follows: #8 seed Dan vs #4 JG, and #6 Brian vs #2 Jeremy:
In another upset, #8 Dan easily handled host and a pre-tourney favorite JG in 2 games to advance to the “A” flight finals! Dan had everything work on both ends of the ice, and JG had some tough luck in both games, but Dan flat out was the better player in this series.
#2 Jeremy ended the upstart run of Brian in 2 quick games to advance to the “A” finals vs Dan…
In a shocker, Dan took game #1 with a late goal off the O.P.P. (“old p*ssy pass” ) maneuver to stun Jeremy and send his blood boiling! Jeremy is no fan of the O.P.P. but Dan was “in it to win it” and he pulled out all the stops. Jeremy, though, showed why he is #1 in the world by easily dispatching Dan in the next 2 games, and even throwing in his own O.P.P. (Oh no he didn’t?!? Oh yes he did!!!) for good measure! Congrats to Jeremy for another well deserved title and trophy!!!
The “A” flight continued with John taking 2 from Brian and then winning a tense 3 game rematch vs Dan to capture the 2nd place trophy. Dan ended up 3rd, but it was his first “A” flight hardware of any kind and it was well earned.
The “B” bracket held a little more true to form, but there were some upsets there, too, including “Monkey” upending Michael and Larry beating Marc. When the 1st round of “B” was over, Marc, Larry, Michael, and young Anthony ended up in the “C” flight, and everyone else stayed in “B.” Marc eventually won the “C” trophy with wins over Michael and Anthony. The “B” final 4 came down to Jimmy vs Bill and Jason vs Kieran. Bill and Kieran won well contested series in those matchups, and the “B” title went to Bill over Kieran.
Congratulations to all the winners (Jeremy, JG, and Dan in “A,” Bill in “B,” and Marc in “C”). And thanks to all the players for what I hope was an enjoyable event. As always, I welcome suggestions on how to improve my tournaments – do you like the way the brackets are set up, do you like the tourney format, is the food OK, are the trophies cool, etc, etc, etc. Please offer me feedback, positive or negative, and I’ll always consider it for future events.
Lisa and I thank everyone for being fantastic guests – as always, you left our home clean, and there has never been an issue with any of you who have come to these tournaments. So I’ll keep dong them as long as you all keep coming (maybe one day I’ll even win – not likely!). Thank you again. CHEERS to all, and look for the next tournament In October 2009!!!
